How to make a screenshot look professional

A raw screenshot is cropped tight, has hard edges and usually sits on whatever color your app happens to use. That reads as "unfinished" in a tweet, a landing page or a Product Hunt gallery. A good mockup fixes four things, and Screenshot Studio exposes each of them as a slider or a tile.

  1. Give it room to breathe. Padding is the single biggest upgrade. 48–96 px of space around the shot lets the shadow and background do their job; for social posts where the image is shown small, go lower (24–40 px) so the UI stays legible.
  2. Pick a contrasting background. A light UI looks sharpest on a dark or saturated gradient (Midnight, Sunset, Ocean); a dark UI pops on Peach, Mono or a pale mesh. The gradient should not fight with your brand colors, so when in doubt use the custom pickers and sample your logo color for one of the two stops.
  3. Add a soft shadow, not a hard one. Shadow strength 40–60 with an offset of 20–30 px gives a natural "floating card" look. Crank it only when the background is very bright.
  4. Choose a frame that matches the context. A browser frame tells people it is a web app and lets you show the domain in the address bar. The Mac or Windows window reads as a desktop app. The phone bezel is for mobile screenshots, ideally with the 9:16 or 4:5 ratio. "None" with 12–16 px corners is the cleanest option for documentation and blog posts.

Finish with a caption if the image needs to stand on its own: a short title ("Introducing Inbox Zero") and a one-line subtitle. Keep the tilt under 6° unless you are going for a hero banner; it looks dramatic, but text in the screenshot becomes harder to read.

Recommended sizes for each platform

Use the aspect ratio chips to pad your mockup to the right shape. The canvas keeps your screenshot at full resolution and only grows the background, so nothing is scaled down or blurred. Export at 1x for the web and at 2x for anything that will be shown on a retina display or zoomed into.

Who uses a screenshot beautifier?

Indie makers and startups use it for launch tweets, changelog posts and the "What's new" section of a landing page. Designers wrap UI explorations in a frame before posting to Dribbble or sharing with a client. Technical writers and support teams add padding and a subtle border so screenshots in docs do not bleed into the page background. Marketers batch-style a whole feature set with one preset so every image in a campaign looks consistent.

Everything stays on your device

Screenshot Studio is a static page. When you drop an image it is decoded into memory, drawn onto a canvas together with the background, shadow and frame, and encoded back to PNG or JPG by your browser. There is no upload endpoint and no server-side rendering, so confidential dashboards, unreleased features and customer data never leave your computer. Your style settings are saved in localStorage so the tool opens exactly how you left it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Screenshot Studio free?

Yes. All backgrounds, frames, layout controls, captions and 1x PNG/JPG export are free with no sign-up. Free exports carry a small "Screenshot Studio · free" badge in the corner. The optional one-time Pro upgrade removes it and adds 2x/4x exports, premium backgrounds, batch export to ZIP and unlimited saved style presets.

Do I need to upload my screenshot?

No. The mockup is rendered with the HTML5 Canvas API inside your browser. Your screenshot never leaves your device, nothing is stored on a server, and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

Which image formats can I use?

You can drop, pick or paste PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, GIF (first frame) and BMP images. Output is PNG (with transparency support) or JPG at quality 92. HEIC photos from iPhones are not decoded by browsers, so export them as JPEG first.

Can I remove the watermark?

Yes. The free tier adds a small "Screenshot Studio · free" badge in the bottom-right corner of exports. Screenshot Studio Pro, a one-time purchase, removes the badge from every export, including 2x and 4x and batch ZIP downloads.

Can I style many screenshots at once?

With Pro you can drop several screenshots at the same time; the current background, frame, layout and caption settings are applied to every image and all results are downloaded as one ZIP file. The free version styles one screenshot at a time.

Can I export with a transparent background?

Yes. Choose the "Transparent" background tile and download as PNG. The shadow, frame and rounded corners are preserved on a transparent canvas so you can place the mockup on any slide, website or design. JPG does not support transparency, so JPG exports use a white background instead.
